Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-e- Shirazi has also expressed concerns over Iraq imbroglio, especially for the Shiite Muslims and lamented about division among Iraqi officials and the slow trend of setting up the Iraqi new government. Ayatollah Makarem pointed to the issue of revelation of the holy prophet Mohammad from the Middle East as a historical event and said Western and eastern historians and scientists acknowledge that the Mideast is the origin of human civilization, in other words, the Middle East is the “Cradle of Civilization”. “The more progress made by mankind in social and earthly civilization, the more its need to religion increases,” said the Ayatollah. “Whatsoever man makes more progress in his life, he comes under more serious threats, and hence, his need for religion grows,” he noted. “Equipped with nuclear bombs, chemical and biological weapons and ten-tone bombs, today human being is more at stake,” said the Ayatollah who also referred to the death of some ۱۵۰,۰۰۰ Japanese civilians in the US nuclear bomb attack on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in the Second World War. Ayatollah Makarem also pointed to the chemical attack of Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi dictator, against the Kurdish people in Halabja, northern Iraq.
